Carmen Castillo is internationally known for her literary and film work, in which her Chilean roots and the political and human tragedies of her native country play a central role. In this film, she breaks the silence she has maintained for 50 years around her own history and that of her children. She looks back on events that began in 1970s Chile, when her 'compañero' Miguel Enríquez—like her, a member of the left-wing guerrilla organization MIR—was killed and she herself was abducted and imprisoned by the new dictatorship. Her reflections unfold through archival footage, a poetic voice-over, and intense and moving conversations both with her own children, whose lives have been marked by these events, and with mothers who share a similar history. The film also documents healing rituals performed by an artist friend.
It is the turbulent history of a politically committed woman who, like many activists of her generation, put political struggle before her family, and is now trying to come to terms with the consequences.
